 Sharpen your emotional edge.

Welcome back to another week of "The EQ Edge". Continuing our journey through the Emotional Literacy Series(Now, you can read the archives!), this week, we're turning our attention to an emotion we often yearn for but, surprisingly, find difficult to fully feel: JOY.

Researcher and author Brené Brown calls this "foreboding joy", a paradox where we resist completely experiencing joy out of fear of potential loss. And yet, a Six Seconds Vitality Report 2022 highlights, "Teams with high scores in JOY are 10x more likely to be sustainable and high performing."

Isn't that remarkable? When was the last time you took a moment to celebrate the achievement or progress you and your team made? Leaders who fully embrace joy and cultivate it within their teams are those who foster increased engagement, motivation, and performance. Today, let's delve into the heart of joy, its transformative role in leadership, and how it can ignite positivity and productivity.

 Emotion Spotlight

JOY

"Let your joy be in your journey - not in some distant goal." - Tim Cook

Joy is often overshadowed by the stresses and challenges of leadership. Yet, it serves as a powerful motivator, fostering a sense of accomplishment and reinforcing positivity within the team.

Understanding JOY

Definition: Joy is a profound sense of happiness or pleasure, usually resulting from a sense of achievement or the well-being of oneself and others. It arises not just when expectations are met, but exceeded.

Message: "I am content, and all is well."

Feeling: Joy often manifests as an uplifting sensation, a lightness of being, and a strong inclination to share our positive state with others.

Intensity Spectrum: Contentment < Joy < Euphoria.
Here, "contentment" represents a state of satisfaction and peace, a lesser intensity emotion. "Joy" stands as the core emotion in focus, and "euphoria" signifies a heightened, intense state of joy or happiness.

JOY in Leadership

As a leader, fostering an atmosphere of joy isn't just a 'nice-to-have'; it's an essential ingredient for a robust, resilient, and motivated team.

Useful when:

  1. Celebrating achievements
  2. Promoting team bonding
  3. Elevating motivation and morale
  4. Inspiring creativity

Not useful when:

  1. It undermines the gravity of a situation
  2. It overshadows real issues or challenges

πŸ’‘When joy seems elusive due to the fear of impending loss or disappointment("foreboding joy"), ask yourself, "What is holding me back from fully embracing this joy? Can I let myself simply be in this moment?" Practicing gratitude and mindfulness can help to embrace joy fully, even amid apprehension. Acknowledging our hesitations and consciously choosing to embrace joy as it comes can gradually ease the grip of "foreboding joy," paving the way for more wholehearted enjoyment of life's positive moments.

Communication tips:

  • Express gratitude with phrases like "Great job, team!"
  • Encourage a joyous atmosphere with words like "Let's celebrate our wins."
  • Foster an environment of shared joy with phrases such as "We did this together."

🌟 Weekly Exercise:

This week, look for chances to nurture joy within your team. Celebrate small victories, express appreciation, and recognize collective efforts. Observe how these actions influence team morale, engagement, and productivity.

Integrating an understanding of joy into your leadership style can uplift your team, applaud achievements, and create a more positive and vibrant work environment. We're excited to hear about your experiences championing joy in leadership.

Until next week,
